Horizon 2020 is the European Union’s flagship research funding initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness. Driving economic growth and job creation, Horizon 2020 is at the heart of the EU’s blueprint for a smart, sustainable and inclusive future.
Horizon 2020 has an emphasis on excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling a broad range of societal challenges such as climate change, food security, and safe artificial intelligence. The goals are to ensure Europe produces world-class science, removes barriers to innovation and makes it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation.
Horizon 2020 places a very strong emphasis on the inclusion of SMEs in project consortia, as well as having SME-specific funding instruments. With SMEs taking around two-thirds of EU funding of UK businesses, it represents a great opportunity.
As the name suggests, Horizon 2020 will finish at the end of 2020 and will be replaced by Horizon Europe (see our article for more details). The details of Horizon Europe are still being finalised, but indications are it will be the highest funded programme to date, with a proposed budget of €100B. It is fair to say it will continue to be a fantastic platform for innovation and technology.
There are, of course, uncertainties with regard to Brexit for UK participants. However, we are very hopeful that the UK Government will continue to support UK innovation within Europe as it is such a fundamental contributor to our growth, worldwide presence, and economy.
